Rev. Dr. Ted Smith Spoke About Our Changing Society Club Secretary Eric Lucas introduced our speaker Rev. Dr. Ted Smith.
Rev. Dr. Ted Smith.
The Rev. Dr. Ted A. Smith works at the intersections of practical and political theology. At Candler, Smith teaches especially in the areas of preaching and ethics.
A few key points that Rev. Smith made are:
Volunteer organizations are struggling due to a trend Rev. Smith calls individualization.
Social collectivity is being replaced by individualism which is characterized by more individual choices in business, education and daily life. We have to make more and more choices.
He finds a strong correlation between income and participation in society.
He asks what are the implications that lower income people are not members of congregations?
Rev. Smith’s hope is that because humans are social animals, we will find new ways to connect with each other. Hope is in God who helps us trust in one another.
President Tozzi holds Dr. Smith’s latest book, The End of Theological Education and explains that his book is being gifted to the DeKalb Library system in his honor.
President Tozzi thanks Rev. Smith, wishes everyone a great holiday, until we reconvene in January, and dismisses the club for 2023.
