Dr. Gyimah Whitaker
Updates on Her One Year Anniversary as Superintendent
Rotary member and Chair of the CSD Board, James Hearndon, introduces Dr. Whitaker.
Dr. Gyimah Whitaker, Decatur Rotary Member and Superintendent of Decatur City Schools noted that about one year ago she made one of her first public speeches to the Decatur Rotary Club. Dr. Whitaker began her tenure as superintendent of Decatur City Schools in July 2023 and has made significant strides in her first year. Her primary focus has been on advancing equity and academic excellence within the district. She has been an advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, aiming to create a more inclusive environment for all students.
Rotarian Dr. Whitaker was an honored speaker this past week at Decatur Rotary Club.
Dr. Whitaker launched the "All In Decatur" five-year strategic plan, which emphasizes improving academic outcomes and community engagement. This plan seeks to ensure that every student receives a high-quality education regardless of their background. She has also been involved in enhancing innovative instructional programs to support diverse learning needs.
Additionally, Dr. Whitaker has prioritized effective communication with the community and stakeholders, ensuring that feedback is actively sought and incorporated into district policies and practices. This approach is part of her broader goal to foster a collaborative environment where the voices of parents, students, and teachers are heard and valued. It’s obvious that Dr. Whitaker has made a huge effort to be transparent and communicative. In her talk she mentioned just a few of the communication initiatives she has implemented that are readily available on the CSD website including:

• Supe Scoops, A regular newsletter
• Videos and Awards
Overall, Dr. Whitaker's first year has been marked by a strong commitment to equity, strategic planning, and community engagement, setting a solid foundation for future improvements in Decatur City Schools.
