Keynote Speakers:
Advertising For Change

Rick Garnitz introduced the speakers for today.

Spence Kramer talks about why he started Advertising for Change.

The Decatur Rotary Club welcomed Janis Middleton, Executive Director of Inclusion Strategy, and Spence Kramer, founder and CEO of the TEN6 agency. The genesis for creating Advertising for Change (AFC) according to advertising executive Spence Kramer was the racial strife and lack of diversity in the advertising business that Mr. Kramer experienced for many decades. Mr. Kramer asked himself, “What can I do professionally to change this? In my corner of the world and in my company… what can I do to promote racial harmony?” The answer led to forming AFC. He wrote to several advertising CEOs and formed a coalition of a half dozen agencies that agreed to reach across racial barriers and create agencies that look like our clients and constituents.

Advertising For Change Mission

Janis Middleton talks about the need for diversity in the advertising business.

Janis talked about the real need to open-up the advertising business to better reflect the people they serve. The AFC mission is to create the most diverse, equitable, and inclusive advertising and marketing agency community in the United States – one that reflects the Atlanta market, our country, and the consumers we’re trying to reach.

How We Do It

Janis also talked about the specific things they are doing to achieve diversity:
  • By engaging and educating potential talent in high school, college, and other adjacent industries so that advertising and marketing can be a potential career path for them.
  • By connecting and mentoring diverse talent by providing valuable networking opportunities and connections to leaders in our Atlanta agency community that can coach and guide them into meaningful careers.
  • By enabling access and opportunity for diverse talent who may be interested in the advertising and marketing industry by creating more ways into our field outside of traditional avenues.
  • By growing and cultivating an enduring community of diverse talent in Atlanta and beyond and facilitating connections with potential agencies looking to fill current and future roles.

Advertising for Change approaches outreach to diverse talent by targeting three specific areas:
  • High school students
  • Recent college grads
  • Professionals already working who have transferable experiences and skills relevant for ad careers.

President Alan presents a book for the Dekalb Public Library in honor of our speakers.
