PROGRAM: Rotary is Honored to Hear From Decatur Police Chief W.S. ‘Scott’ Richards
Linda Harris introduces our keynote speaker, Decatur Chief of Police, W.S. Richards.
Chief Richards gave us a look behind the scenes of the Decatur Police operations.
One of Chief Richards' main topics was on the difficulty and lengths they are going to recruit new officers since the pandemic. He cited several factors that make it difficult including:
• Violence against police
• Lack of community support
• Stress of the job
• Competition
On the positive side, the City of Decatur is upping their game and offering more incentives:
• Better pay
• Take-home car program
• Paid dues
• Signing incentives
He also mentioned one of the innovative programs recently launched, partnering with the DeKalb Community Services Board to work closely with mental health clinicians to provide co-responder programs.
The department's primary goals are to:
Maintain an active presence in the business district.
Continue to expand officer involvement with neighborhood associations, the Decatur Business Association, and other community groups.
Strengthen communications and connections throughout the community.
Continue the child ID safety program to enhance safety and develop positive relationships with the youth of Decatur.
Plan and implement a pedestrian and traffic safety program.
Continue to develop the School Resource Officer program.
