Kate Golebiowska is an Australian Fulbright Professional Scholar who is passionate about how migration policy, economics and social structures intersect and can be shaped to improve economic and social engagement for migrants. Currently based at Goizueta Business School, she is investigating the Start:ME program for micro-entrepreneurs to inform the development of adaptable business accelerator programs for migrant women in Australia. Kate is a Senior Research Fellow at Charles Darwin University in Darwin, Australia.

The Invocation

 

 

Rev. James Brewer-Calvert based his invocation on the "Goo Goos" in honor of our keynote speaker DA Sherry Boston. Goo Goos was a term that originated in the late 19th century to describe a group of urban reformers who sought to clean up corrupt city governments and promote good government practices. The term was originally used as a derogatory term by political machines and their supporters to mock these reformers.

 

The Goo Goos were typically middle-class professionals, academics, and journalists who believed in the importance of honest and efficient government. They advocated for reforms such as civil service reform, secret ballots, and nonpartisan elections. They also supported the regulation of businesses and industries to prevent monopolies and promote competition.

Keynote Speaker:
DeKalb County DA Sherry Boston

 

 

 

The Decatur Rotary Club was honored to welcome DeKalb County DA Sherry Boston especially since several district attorneys around the country are front page news recently. DA Boston didn’t comment on the Trump indictments directly, but she did discuss how prosecutorial discretion and authority is under assault. She stated that for every case, some people will believe that the charges are not fair or not right.

 

So, in her own case, she works hard to be fair and balanced and to listen carefully to the citizens who put her in office. To accomplish a fair and balanced approach, she has stood up two new units in her office:

 

1. Digital Forensics Unit: To analyze digital data pertinent to cases for example, from digital smart phones.

 

2. Firearm Violence Prevention Unit: to reduce crime and violence, engaging with the community on lawful gun ownership and best practices of gun ownership.

 

Sherry has gained a reputation as a tough but fair prosecutor, known for her commitment to holding criminals accountable for their actions.

 

Over the years, Sherry Boston rose through the ranks of the District Attorney's Office, eventually becoming the DeKalb County District Attorney herself. In this role, she continued to fight for justice and fairness, working tirelessly to make sure that every victim received the justice they deserved.

 

Sherry Boston's commitment to justice was tested in 2020, when the country was gripped by protests over police brutality and racial injustice. She knew that the people of DeKalb County were looking to her for leadership, and she rose to the challenge.

Under Sherry Boston's leadership, the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office worked closely with law enforcement and community leaders to ensure that protests remained peaceful and that any criminal activity was swiftly and fairly prosecuted.
Despite facing criticism from some quarters, Sherry Boston remained steadfast in her commitment to justice and fairness. She knew that the work she was doing was important, and that it would make a real difference in the lives of people in DeKalb County.
