OUR PROGRAM
STAR Students and
Teachers

NOTE: Early start time at 11:30 am

The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program honors Georgia’s highest achieving high school seniors and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development. To obtain the STAR nomination, high school students must have the highest score on any single test date of the SAT and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average. Locally, STAR Students and STAR Teachers are honored by their schools and receive special recognition in their communities from one of the more than 172 civic organizations and businesses that serve as local STAR sponsors. Decatur Rotary serves as the local STAR sponsor for DeKalb County.

Be sure to arrive early for this special program. Lunch buffet will open at 11:45. Come at 11:30 to help us welcome our many special guests.

FRIDAY | APRIL 18, 2025

Dud Larus, Steve Szeremeta and Jason Conn

Tom Adams gave the invocation. Dud Larus shared the positive news that our club has been noticed at the district for being active and having a growing, thriving membership. Dud also thanked Charles Lutin for creating the greeter program this year, and noted that managing the greeters would be a great job for a newer club member when Charles rolls off in July.
Jason Conn inducted a new member, Steve Szeremeta (pronounced SHUR-meta), who is a retired attorney.

Maria Alvarez introduced our speaker, Emily Holden. Emily is a stand-up comedian from Decatur who mines the rich field of motherhood and family life for her comedy. She entertained the club members with parenting jokes and referred to herself as the “poor man’s Reese Witherspoon.”

Visitors included Kurt Blumthal, guest of Jason Conn; Nancy Lucas, guest (and wife) of Eric Lucas; Holly Bennett, guest (and wife) of John Bennett; and Rachel Cogburn, current host mom to our Rotary exchange student and also a guest of John Bennett.
